Hi,

I am going to New Zealand for a holiday in August and would like to buy some duty free Alcohol to give as gifts. Would anyone be able to tell me what the duty free quota is for bringing wine and spirits into New Zealand. Or where I can find that information?

The New Zealand Customs allowances specify: A traveller may import the following quantities of tobacco products and alcoholic beverages free of Customs charges, if:

(i) The goods accompany them through the Customs arrival process; and

(ii) The goods are not being carried on behalf of any other person or persons; and

(iii) The goods are not intended for sale or exchange Cigarettes, cigars, tobacco 200 cigarettes, or 250 grams of tobacco, or 50 cigars, or A mixture of all three weighing not more than 250 grams.

Alcoholic beverages Up to six bottles (4.5 litres) of wine, port or sherry Up to twelve cans (4.5 litres) of beer Three bottles (or other containers) each containing not more than 1125ml of spirits, liqueur, or other spirituous beverages.

Starting salary (for new graduates) from 31 March 2009 is NZ$44,562 annually for registred nurses and registered midwives working in public hospitals. I’m not sure what this translates to monthly or hourly. But, check out the current Nursing and Midwifery Multi-Employer Collective Agreement (MECA) – the full range of salaries are listed in the MECA.

Can you give me some information on New Zealand school education system, because I am writing a paper comparing to the United States of America.

One main difference is the funding of education. There are all sorts of differences but to help you along you should look at the decile system used in NZ. This, loosely, translates to the socioeconomic level of the parents and the community the school is in.

Put simply, a low income/decile school is likely to need extra help and funding so, in theory, the government provides extra financial support to those schools. That is a very simple explanation and not very technical though.

Funding comes from the Government, not through property taxes. Otherwise, I will let someone else answer about the education system – I better get back to work!

I’m an American citizen and I’m planning on becoming a nurse (not sure about whether I’ll be RN or NP though). I’ve considered moving to New Zealand someday, probably a few years after finishing school.

What requirements will I have to fulfill to be able to become a nurse in New Zealand once I already have proper training for the US? Tests, more school, etc…? Thanks for any information!

You will have to apply to the New Zealand Council of Nursing to be registered. Once you have the documentation they want, and it seems no matter how thorough you are, there is always something else they want, you will have to do a competency assessment programme.

This is a 6 or 8 week course (depending on where you do it) and it basically prepares you to work as a nurse in New Zealand, as well as giving them an idea that you really are a nurse and you know what you are doing. You will have to pay for this course, and if you are on a temporary work visa and not a permanent resident, it will cost anywhere from $3400 to $4500.

You don’t get any type of reimbursement for this course. (If you are a permanent resident, the course is about $1000 or less.) There is a serious shortage of nurses in this country, so I’ve been told, but they don’t do much to get nurses from more advanced countries in to the system.

I plan to visit New Zealand many times of course before I actually make the move. My question to you is, what would be the best course of action concerning becoming a naturalized citizen of New Zealand?

What would be the most efficient way of doing so? And what requirements would one have to meet to become a citizen of New Zealand?

Citizenship by grant Migrants to New Zealand and people born here on or after 1 January 2006 who are not citizens at birth can apply for a grant of citizenship. Citizens by grant enjoy all the same rights and privileges as other New Zealand citizens.

Adults must meet a number of requirements before they can obtain a grant of citizenship. Generally, they must have lived in New Zealand for at least 5 years, be of good character, have knowledge of the responsibilities and privileges of citizenship, and of the English language, and intend to continue to live in New Zealand.

People with certain criminal convictions may not be able to become New Zealand citizens or may have to wait for a certain period after their conviction before they can become citizens. New citizens are generally required to attend a citizenship ceremony to take the oath or affirmation of allegiance.

Citizenship ceremonies are important occasions and are generally conducted by local authorities. At the ceremony new citizens make a public commitment to New Zealand by swearing allegiance to the Queen, and receive their citizenship certificates.

Once they receive their certificates they are New Zealand citizens.

And who really wants to be living in sweltering 30 degree plus temperatures all summer, surrounded by cockroaches and other “heat seeking” creatures. Kiwis do you feel that our crime rate is truly high? Or is just the media having a frenzy, because there’s often not much other “breaking news” to make the headlines each night I’d love to here some positive thoughts on this and I think its only right that we should continue to educate people about the positive aspects of living in NZ and those of you who do believe our crime rate is bad, i want facts and figures not just random opinions based on recent happenings.

There’s an answerer on her who keeps claiming “New Zealands crime rate is 10 times higher than new york city” but without anything to back such a statement up, i for one feel its a blatant lie you know who you are…

I love the whole Marlborough area, have walked both the Queen Charlotte track and been to Cape Jackson and the Outer Queen Charlotte track, magic area, will definitely continue to return Kaiteri, Fiordland, Bay of Plenty, the Southern lakes are but a few more of my favourite spots in our A++++++++ country.
