Maui is the superhero in many Maori legends. The South island is his Waka (canoe) Stewart Island is his anchor; and the North Island is the giant fish he pulled up from the sea.

There are 11 times more sheep in NZ than people. “Kia ora” literally means “have life” in Maori. But we use it for hi and sometimes goodbye. “Turituri” means “be quiet” and is often used in the classroom. One in 5 Kiwis are born overseas, in a different country.

The Maori were the first people to use trench warfare. They were outnumbered and out-weaponed by the British, but won many battles by outsmarting them. So the British had to lie to the press back home to feel better! NZ has 3 climate zones – desert, rainforest and alpine.

There were actually many Treaty of Waitangis put around the country and the translations into Maori were bad too, so we have some problems today in interpreting it. It was supposed to grant equal rights but was forgotten about for a long time and a lot eaten by rats. The Maori version is the valid one according to International law. Missionaries were the ones who developed the written Maori language.

A “hangi” is a traditional meal of meat, potatoes, kumara and other vegetables cooked under the ground to produce a strong flavour. The Maori were said to have come to NZ in 7 waka, from a mythical land called Hawaiki. There were Mori Ori in the Chatham islands, before the Maori but no one is sure why they disappered.

Yes New Zealand has postal codes and has done for some time. However, they have not been used to any great extent. Recently, the post office overhauled the whole system and introduced a far more comprehensive set of postal codes.

They are actively encouraging their usage so that they can make the whole delivery system more efficient. Don’t worry about not putting a postal code on your card/letter. As long as the address is accurate it will be delivered without the code.

I am going to New Zealand for a holiday in August and would like to buy some duty free Alcohol to give as gifts. Would anyone be able to tell me what the duty free quota is for bringing wine and spirits into New Zealand. Or where I can find that information?

The New Zealand Customs allowances specify: A traveller may import the following quantities of tobacco products and alcoholic beverages free of Customs charges, if:

(i) The goods accompany them through the Customs arrival process; and

(ii) The goods are not being carried on behalf of any other person or persons; and

(iii) The goods are not intended for sale or exchange Cigarettes, cigars, tobacco 200 cigarettes, or 250 grams of tobacco, or 50 cigars, or A mixture of all three weighing not more than 250 grams.

Alcoholic beverages Up to six bottles (4.5 litres) of wine, port or sherry Up to twelve cans (4.5 litres) of beer Three bottles (or other containers) each containing not more than 1125ml of spirits, liqueur, or other spirituous beverages.

Starting salary (for new graduates) from 31 March 2009 is NZ$44,562 annually for registred nurses and registered midwives working in public hospitals. I’m not sure what this translates to monthly or hourly. But, check out the current Nursing and Midwifery Multi-Employer Collective Agreement (MECA) – the full range of salaries are listed in the MECA.

Can you give me some information on New Zealand school education system, because I am writing a paper comparing to the United States of America.

One main difference is the funding of education. There are all sorts of differences but to help you along you should look at the decile system used in NZ. This, loosely, translates to the socioeconomic level of the parents and the community the school is in.

Put simply, a low income/decile school is likely to need extra help and funding so, in theory, the government provides extra financial support to those schools. That is a very simple explanation and not very technical though.

Funding comes from the Government, not through property taxes. Otherwise, I will let someone else answer about the education system – I better get back to work!

I’m an American citizen and I’m planning on becoming a nurse (not sure about whether I’ll be RN or NP though). I’ve considered moving to New Zealand someday, probably a few years after finishing school.

What requirements will I have to fulfill to be able to become a nurse in New Zealand once I already have proper training for the US? Tests, more school, etc…? Thanks for any information!

You will have to apply to the New Zealand Council of Nursing to be registered. Once you have the documentation they want, and it seems no matter how thorough you are, there is always something else they want, you will have to do a competency assessment programme.

This is a 6 or 8 week course (depending on where you do it) and it basically prepares you to work as a nurse in New Zealand, as well as giving them an idea that you really are a nurse and you know what you are doing. You will have to pay for this course, and if you are on a temporary work visa and not a permanent resident, it will cost anywhere from $3400 to $4500.

You don’t get any type of reimbursement for this course. (If you are a permanent resident, the course is about $1000 or less.) There is a serious shortage of nurses in this country, so I’ve been told, but they don’t do much to get nurses from more advanced countries in to the system.
